Buddhist Tales - Demons in the Desert

Farewell
Picture "Farewell" kindly provided by h.koppdelaney

There once was two merchants who wanted to do some business in a distant land, back then the only path was a narrow trail going through a desert.  Some say was the desert was haunted by man eating chameleon demons...

The two merchants were not detered...the first merchant Ali, convinced his friend Fareed that he should go first...thinking secretly that he could benefit from selling his goods first...Fareed agreed, for he did not have any attachment to going first.

Ali went off , as he entered the desert with his convoy, from the opposite end, approached another group of people drenched with water...the leader of the strangers was very friendly and spoke rather convincingly that within another hour there is a beautiful lake with crystal clear waters, with palm and various types of fruit trees, and it would be wise if they simply emptied out their water to save themselves carry it for another hour...

Ali refused at first, but then the Leader pointed to the animals and said angrily, "Don't you have any mercy for them? look how tired they are getting"

Ali was pursuaded by the stranger, and told his convoy to tip the water over...As they walked, and walked...they saw no water...they got so tired, so weak to move, that they collapsed...

The strangers returned, but not as people but in their true form, demons with razor sharp teeth, red eyes, and monstorous horns...the demons spared no-one including the animals...

Fareed started course a month later...and approached the same ill fated junction that Ali met with the strangers...the same water drench strangers arrived...when the stranger told him about the story of the lake, Fareed found it a bit odd, that there was a lake of water in the middle of the desert...he was disturbed by their presence and their over friendly mannerisms...he looked deeply into their eyes, and looked carefully at their convoy...many things did not look right, the eyes were a subtle shade of red he had never seen before...the shoes were dry, the caravans look empty...

He said to the strangers "thank you for your advice, but we prefer not to throw our water away, and we would like to get through this desert without stopping any longer"

The stranger persisted angrily, at which time Fareed, simply ignored the strangers, and signalled to his convoy to move ahead...as he left he could hear the strangers cursing him in some strange dialect...During the way he talked to his crew...he told them how he felt a strange sick feeling in his stomach as he saw them approaching earlier...and told everyone to be at their gaurd, that they could have encountered the man eating chameleon demons...

They came across the remains of Ali and his convoy...Fareed recognized Ali's caravan and his blood drenched clothes...

Fareed told everyone to stop, and they buried their friends...that night they stood gaurd...the demons did come, but as soon as they came, everyone came out, and started blowing on their horns...Fareed knew that the demons were scared of any sort of musical instruments...the demons ran away petrified...

Fareed gathered the merchandise of the first convoy and proceeded safely across the desert....

The moral of this story is simple...keep your gaurd up, be alert, be focused, there are many things or people that will rob you of your time and vital energy...there are many distractions, temptations and dangers...and the only thing you have is alertness, and clarity of your goals in life...one can waste half a life time watching TV, or overworking...one can self indulge in terrible harmful habits...all of these are but demons in the desert...
